West Point has been a thriving community since well before the gold rush. Even before it was "discovered" by Kit Carson, the Miwok Indians had a bustling community here. The Native Americans still make up an important part of this diverse and growing foothill community.
West Point sits between the North and Middle Forks of the Mokelumne River on Highway 26. It is an area of dramatic natural beauty with tall pines and several varieties of oaks. At the 2700 foot elevation the climate is perfect, above the fog and smog and below the heavy snows.
