Softly And Tenderly

Will Thompson owned a couple music stores and started up his own music publishing business. His real love was composing hymns. He was most remembered for his travels by horse and buggy from one small community to another throughout Ohio singing his songs to people everywhere. "Softly and Tenderly" was probably his most popular hymn. It was certainly the favorite of D. L. Moody who used it almost constantly as his invitation hymn. In fact, Moody, on his death bed, feebly whispered to Will Thompson, "I would rather have written Softly and Tenderly than anything I have been able to do in my whole life."

verse 2

Why should we linger when Jesus is pleading,
Pleading for you and for me?
Why should we wait, then, and heed not His mercies,
Mercies for you and for me?

verse 3

O for the wonderful love He has promised,
Promised for you and for me;
Tho' we have sinned He has mercy and pardon,
Pardon for you and for me.
