Shall We Gather At The River

This hymn was written during a time when life was hard. It was the vision of heaven that carried the believers through the hardships. It was from this era that this hymn was born. Possibly we should focus a little more on the next life, rather than on this life.
  5   5   5   -4  5 -5   6  5
Shall we gath-er at the riv-er,

 -5     -5   -5  6   -5   5   -4  6
Where bright ang-el feet have tr-od,

  5   5   5   -4   5   -5  6  5
With its cry-stal tide for-e-ver

  5   5  -4 -4 5    -5   5-4  4
Flow-ing by t-h-e throne o-f God?

chorus

-6    -6    7   -7  7 -6   6  5
Yes, we'll gath-er at the riv-er,

 5   -5   5 -5    5  -5 5 -5 -4   5  6
The beaut-i-ful, the beaut-i-ful riv-er;

 -6  -6  -6  -6    7    -7 -6   6  5
Gath-er with the saints at the riv-er

  5   -4   -4  5    -5   5-4  4
That flows by the throne o-f God.

verse 2

On the margin of the river,
Washing up its silver spray,
We will walk and worship ever,
All the happy, golden day.

verse 3

Ere we reach the shining river,
Lay we ev'ry burden down;
Grace our spirits will deliver,
And provide a robe and crown.

verse 4

Soon we'll reach the silver river,
Soon our pilgrimage will cease;
Soon our happy hearts will quiver
With the melody of peace.

Verse 5

At the smiling of the river,
Mirror of the Savior's face,
Saints whom death will never sever
Life their songs of saving grace.
