Stand Up, Stand Up For Jesus

Dudly Tyng was a fearless preacher. In fact, he was asked to resign from his Episcopalian church because of his straight-forward doctrinal preaching and his strong stand against slavery. So we went out into the streets of Philadelphia and began preaching noon-day services at the YMCA. At one such service over 5,000 men gathered and of these over 1,000 responded by committing their hearts and lives to Christ. During this sermon Dudly Tyng remarked, "I must tell my Master's errand, and I would rather this right arm were amputated at the trunk than that I should come short of my duty to you in delivering God's message." Ironically the next week his arm was caught in a corn thrasher in a barn and it was severed from his body. He died four days later from loss of blood and infection. A group of ministers gathered around him and asked for any final statement. He whispered, "Let us all stand up for Jesus." George Duffied, a close friend and Presbyterian pastor wrote this hymn based upon those last words.
  6    7    7    8  7   7 -6
Stand up, stand up for Je-sus,

 7  6    7   -8  8    -8
Ye sol-diers of the cross;

  6    7   7   8  7   7  -6
Lift high His roy-al ban-ner,

 7   6   7   8  -8    7
It must not suf-fer loss.

  6  -8   -8   7 -8  8   8
From vic-t'ry un-to vic-t'ry

 8  -9 8   -6   -8  7 -7
His ar-my shall He le-ad,

  6   7  7   8   7  7    -6
'Til ev-ery foe is con-quered

 7     6    7   8  -8   7
And Christ is Lord in-deed.

verse 2

Stand up, stand up for Jesus,
The trumpet call obey:
Forth to the mighty conflict,
In this His glorious day.
Yet that are men now serve Him
Against unnumbered foes;
Let courage rise with danger
And strength to strength oppose.

verse 3

Stand up, stand up for Jesus,
Stand in His strength alone;
The arm of flesh will fail you,
Ye dare not trust your own.
Put on the gospel armor,
Each piece put on with prayer;
Where duty calls, or danger
Be never wanting there.

verse 4

Stand up, stand up for Jesus,
The strife will not be long;
This day the noise of battle,
The next the victor's song.
To him that overcometh
A crown of life shall be:
He with the King of glory
Shall reign eternally.
