Jesus The Very Thought Of Thee

This bright shining star of a hymn actually came out of the dark ages when the church was morally and spiritually bankrupt. Its author was a monk named Bernard from a monastary at Clairvaux, France. He wrote a 192 line poem entitled "Joyful Rhythm on the Name of Jesus", around 1150. From this poem Edward Caswall translated portions for this hymn in 1814. I encourage you to memorize the melody and the lyrics. It will change your life.
key of G
 8  8    8  -8  8   -9    -7   7
Je-sus, the ver-y thought of Thee,

 6     6    6     8   -8   -8
With sweet-ness fills my breast;

-9   -9   8  -8   7   -7  -6  6
But sweet-er far Thy face to see,

 6  -6  7    8   -8    7
And in Thy pres-ence rest.

verse 2
No voice can sing, no heart can frame,
Nor can the memory find
A sweeter sound than Thy blest name,
O Savior of mankind.

verse 3
O hope of every contrite heart,
O joy of all the meek,
To those who fall, how kind Thou art!
How good to those who seek!

verse 4
But what to those who find? Ah, this
No tongue or pen can show;
The love of Jesus, what it is
None but His loved ones know.

verse 5
Jesus, our only joy be Thou,
As Thou our prize wilt be;
Jesus, be Thou our glory now
And through eternity.
