John Fawcett's life can certainly be cited as an example of a spiritual leader who sacrificed ambition and person gain for Christian devotion. His first church as a pastor was at a small and impoverished Baptist church in Northern England. After several years he was offered a better paying position at a large and influential church in London. He declined because he did not want to leave the people he had come to love so much. Later he was offered a position as the principle of a Baptist academy in London. Again he declined. He remained at the same small church for the remainder of his life, serving as their pastor for 51 years. During this time he wrote this most fitting hymn.
