CURRENT PROJECTS

This page is to be an on going look at my new carvings. It will be up dated on a regular basis. Please feel free to email me with your thoughts on the new projects as they unfold.

The above cut out is the beginning of a White Throated Sparrow. Click on the thumbnails and watch this little guy come to life, from the sketches to the finish.

Wren and the Tennis Shoe These cute little guys will nest in the strangest places. I am going to carve this shoe and will include a wren. At this point I have not decided how to mount the little bird.

Singing Wren This looks like the composition that I am going to use for this carving. This little guy is singing for a mate or maybe just happy to have found this possible New Home. That sounds like a good name for this piece, well it's time to get carving.

New Home Have a look at my finished carving. The happy little singing wren was carved from sugar pine and the shoe has been sculpted from cedar. Both the shoe and wren have been sealed and painted with washes of acrylic paint.

For this next project I went right to the wood. The California Quail has always been a good subject for me. This bird already has an attitude. Click on these thumbnails and see the begining of this sugar pine carving.

At this point of my carving I have started the feather detail work. Beginning with the head I have set the eyes and have started the burning. This is the most tedious and time consuming part of the detail work.

Well it's been almost three weeks and the feather detail is complete. The bird has been sealed and is now ready for paint.

I have just begun to paint using washes of artists acrylics. Once the base coat in applied then numerous washes are applied until the desired shade and affect is captured. Notice how this painting process begins to add life to my carving.

This is the finished carving, painted and mounted on a piece of drift wood. Going to title this piece "Looking Back".
