Volcano Internet has introduced Spam Filtering and Virus Scanning as part of our email services. These services greatly reduce unwanted email and also offer protection to your computer from viruses spread through email.

Although we feel these services add value to our overall service, they are optional and can be discontinued at any time.

The Way it Works

When email is sent to you, it is sent to our incoming email server where it is stored until you download your email to your computer. Without any type of filtering or scanning, anyone can send any type of message, picture, or program to your email address. When you receive your email from the server, you will then have all these email messages on your computer. Some may contain viruses, have content that you may find objectionable, or be just plain annoying.

With Spam Filtering and Virus Scanning, email is scanned when it reaches our server. If it is found to be containing a virus or having the fingerprint of spam, it is sidelined to a special area call “greymail”. Thus avoiding it from being downloaded to your computer and saving you from having to see something your may not want to see, or from having a possibly destructive computer virus.

What You Need to Know and Do

No filtering or scanning system is perfect and you may still receive spam or viruses, and legitimate messages may be sidelined in the greymail area. We recommend that users have some sort of virus protection on their system and also educate themselves in the way computer viruses spread to further protect themselves.

The greymail box, where email messages found to be containing a virus or being spam are stored, is accessible as a webpage. From here you can review the messages that have been trapped. If you find that something you would like to receive was placed in greymail, you can either forward the message to the inbox, or permanently allow messages from that sender by placing that sender in the “whitelist”. This is especially important if you subscribe to a mailing list that sends email to many addresses. Again, if you are a mailing list and are not receiving messages from the list, it may be being detected as spam and in the greymail box. You can go into the greymail box and allow messages to come through from a specific sender by placing them into the “whitelist”. You then should be able to receive messages from your mailing list.

There are two ways to access the greymail. You can directly go into greymail by opening up your browser (such as Internet Explorer or Netscape) and typing greymail.volcano.net into the address bar. When you type the address in, make sure you do not type the www that normally comes before website addresses. You can also access greymail by going to webmail.volcano.net in your browser. Again this is without the www in front of the address. You can then click on the “GreyMail” link in the left hand side menu.

For more information and instructions on using Greymail, please click on the Greymail Instructions link below.

We feel that the Spam Filtering and Virus Scanning options are a great help to users. These services will limit the amount of junk email that you receive and help protect your computer from viruses. If you have any questions or concerns please contact us.
