What A Friend We Have In Jesus
Some thought that Joe the woodcutter was a strange old man. He had no close friends. He lived a rather humble life, giving away most of his earnings to the poor and ill. What few knew was that Joe was a college graduate from Ireland. He was once engaged to be married but on the night before the wedding his fiance drowned. Joe then traveled to Canada where he tried to follow the teachings of Jesus. This hymn was a poem that he wrote on his journey across the Atlantic.
9 9 -10 9 8 7 7 -6
What a friend we have in Je-sus,
6 7 8 7 9 8 -8
All our sins and griefs to bear!
9 9 -10 9 8 7 7 -6
What a priv-i-ledge to car-ry
6 7 8 -8 7 -7 7
Ev-'ry-thing to God in prayer!
-8 7 -8 8 -9 -8 8 9
Oh, what peace we of-ten for-feit,
-10 -10 9 8 -9 8 -8
Oh, what need-less pain we bear,
9 9 -10 9 8 7 7 -6
All be-cause we do not car-ry
6 7 8 -8 7 -7 7
Ev-'ry-thing to God in prayer!
verse 2
Have we trials and temptations?
Is there trouble anywhere?
We should never be discouraged
Take it to the Lord in prayer.
Can we find a friend so faithful
Who will all our sorrows share?
Jesus knows our ev'ry weakness
Take it to the Lord in Prayer.
verse 3
Are we weak and heavy laden,
Cumbered with a load of care?
Precious Savior, still our refuge
Take it to the Lord in prayer.
Do thy friends despise, forsake thee?
Take it to the Lord in prayer;
In His arms He'll take and shield thee,
Thou wilt find a solace there.
