Beneath The Cross of Jesus

Sheriff Clephane, from Scotland, had three daughters. The youngest, Elizabeth, was always in frail health and died at a fairly young age. Yet while she was alive she was known for her Christian kindness and folks nicknamed her "little Sunbeam". She also wrote several poems, most of which were published anonymously. This hymn is one of her poems which was not published until after her death.

Be-neath the cross of Je-sus,

I fain would take my stand,

 5    7  7  7 -7  -6   6  -5
The Shad-ow of a might-y Rock

 5  -4 -4  -4 -4   5
With-in a wea-ry land;

A home with-in the wil-der-ness

6  -6  -6 -6  5  -5
A rest up-on the way

 -5  -5   -7  -6   6 -5   5    5    6
From the burn-ing of the noon-day heat

-5  -5   5   4   5 -4   4
And the bur-den of the day.

verse 2
Upon that cross of Jesus
My eyes at times can see
The very dying form of One
Who suffered there for me:
And from my smitten heart, with tears,
To wonders I confess
The wonders of His glorious love
And my unworthiness.

verse 3
I take, O cross, thy shadow
For my abiding place;
I ask no other sunshine than
The sunshine of His face,
Content to let the world go by,
To know no gain or loss,
My sinful self my only shame,
My glory all the cross.
